Committee Reports:

Trauma/ENPC report (Darlene Whitlock):  Trauma:  Darlene received the composite quality scores – no one in the state had composite scores less than 3.0.  Darlene has a copy of all the instructors in the state and she has taught the most classes this reporting period.  There are lots of classes going on.  More rural areas don’t need as many classes.  She cautioned all instructors to teach correctly as people will “rat” you out.  ENPC:  Not as many classes as TNCC.  The PALS renewal option is no longer available with ENPC since the changes in the PALS guidelines.  She participated in the conference call – most of the time was spent on the upcoming TNCC update rollout.  The national office was able to accommodate everyone’s first choice.  The number of participants per state depends on the number of members.  Determination of representatives from Kansas was based on several factors:  Number of classes taught, participation on national and state level, geographic location and interest in participating.  New tests should be ready in the fall and the new class starts April 2008.  Darlene suggested we submit something to the ENA Connection State of the States column regarding our seat belt legislation.

Injury Prevention (Marcia Bulleigh-Earley):  No report.

Education (Marcia Bulleigh-Earley):  The presentations at this meeting were the first attempt to present educational information at each meeting.  Marcia would like topic ideas.  Suggestion was made to put on the web site.

Scholarship (Gwen Philbrook):  Stef reported for Gwen.  Julie Venall sent a thank you note for her scholarship.

General Assembly/Nominating (Gwen Philbrook):  Applications to represent the state of Kansas at the National Meeting this year must be postmarked by June 1 or hand delivered at the June meeting.  It was noted there is no form available on the web site.  Discussion was held regarding the revisions requested regarding the ENPC/TNCC points.  Jane will finish revisions to the application and ask David to post on the site.

By-Laws (Susan McDaniel):  No report.

Nursing Practice (Bev White):  Discussion regarding differing protocols and guidelines for conscious sedation, rapid sequence intubation, monitoring post procedure, which induction drugs can be given by RN’s and for what.  There are many different policies and we are seeing many changes.

Government Affairs (Jane Ross):  Jane reported on the Government Affairs workshop recently held in Arlington Heights with Kathi Ream.  Any member can go to the web site and ask for automatic updates to be sent on the bills of interest.  This service will let you know when the bill is coming up for discussion in committee, when it is being voted on, how your particular representatives voted, etc.  Some discussion was held on the bills currently wending their way through the various legislative bodies.

Communication (Joyce Radke):  No report.

Membership and Fund Raising (Charla Holman):  Still discussing a road trip around the state to encourage more participation.  Committee will have a booth at the upcoming trauma summit.

Chapter reports:   ENACK:  Meetings continue to be held the fourth Monday of each month at 7 pm.  We are starting to plan our annual summer party.

EKENA:  No report.

National Board Report (Mitch Jewett):  The state council challenge is on!  Do we want to donate as a state council?  Decision was made to table discussion until after the treasurer’s report.

Treasurer’s report (Lynette Kornelson):  Accepted as presented.

National Board Report (cont’d):  Motion passed to provide airfare and hotel for TNCC update rollout participants even if amount exceeds $600.  If amount less than $600, remainder stays with state council.  Discussion returned to the state council challenge.  Motion passed to donate $500 to the challenge.  Information is available regarding the candidates running for the board and for national office.  Voting is coming up – May 17 through June 16.  Remember to vote!  The Frank Cole scholarship was inadvertently left out of the list of scholarships available.  Deadline is May 1.  There is now a Clinical Nurse Managers work team of which Mitch is a member.  Three of nine board members are clinical managers.  Kansas State Council now has another published member – Darlene Whitlock.

Old business:  Discussion ensued on the annual (or at least we try) trauma summit.  Darlene questioned whether the council was interested in presenting this again this year.  Consensus was yes so Darlene will contact Rolling Hills Zoo for dates, KSNA for co-sponsorship, etc. and communicate via e-mail on her progress prior to the next meeting.

New business:  None.

Meeting adjourned.  Many thanks to Hays Medical Center for sponsoring the meeting and the delicious lunch.

Respectfully submitted,

Jane Ross, RN, BSN, CEN
